I was looking for a comfortable headlamp with a red led for reading at night (Helps you go to sleep faster with the soft red light). First one of these I received wouldn't work right out of the box with a couple different sets of new batteries. Amazon was very good about replacing and I received the replacement in a week or so. The bad part was the 2nd didn't work either! Time for a refund and look for a different light.

This headlight is very versatile. The single red LED is perfect for working in the dark without impacting your night vision. The three levels of white light go from bright to very bright and there is also a flash option to extend battery life which is already very long. The light and strap are very sturdy and well made. I primarily use this light for night running and it works extremely well on dark trails or dark icy roads.

I have been an owner of the Energizer Trailfinder 6 LED light for 4 years and I love it. Now I needed a second headlamp, and my choice was to by another Energizer LED lamp. I could not find the 6 LED lamp anymore, so I went for the 3 LED headlamp instead. At least it was an Energizer, so it must be good. Bummer! This light was a big disappointment. I remember before I bought my first headlamp, I read a lot of reviews where people complained about the push button to turn the light on was hard to operate. Many reviewers wanted Energizer to make a lamp with a slide switch instead. Well, I guess Energizer listened to the people and created this head lamp instead. The slide switch is really easy to turn on, too easy. Don't be surprised when you bring out this 3 LED headlamp when it's dark and you really need it, just to find that the lamp has been on all the time and you are out of batteries. When you put the lamp down in your backpack or pocket, it is way to easy to switch it on by accident.

Now to the light. Energizer have cut down the size of the lamp and put the LEDs more close together. They still call it flood light, even though the beam is more narrow and creates a sort of yellowish spot in the middle.

As a work light when you have the object close to you, the the lamp works well. As a headlamp for the trail out in the woods the light is not good enough.

I would not recommend this 3 LED headlamp. There are too many flaws.

I bought one of these for use at work to see in a dark unlit area. It worked great. However, I found it most useful at home when I had a three day power outage. In a power outage, this is a must have! You can walk room to room and you don't have to worry about carrying flashlights or lanterns. It's also great for reading. A+++

This is my first headlamp and it has worked very well for me. The available angles that the lamp can do is very good and suits me needs well. It has a very long use time I had it in strobe mode for 72 hours.

The light at max is fantastically bright. Low is a very nice reading light level.

It works well for gloves as long as they are not too padded.

It is a bit stiff for the head, I would prefer some more padding there.

This light is BRIGHT! The batteries seem to last about as advertised. I have used this at least 15 times with home projects and out camping. We have cheaper head lamps for the kids and they don't hold a candle (pun) to this one for brightness. This one is water resistant too. I would buy more as need arises.

I bought this to replace my working petzl tika lamp. I use rechargeables because I use this light everyday for work as trim carpenter. Works fine. Slightly better than the petzl one because it has a low power setting that makes the batteries last a little longer. It got good recommendations by consumersearch who said the batteries lasted a long time, but I think it is only a little better than the petzl tika one. The switch and battery change are much easier than the petzl. Low power is plenty for me in a dark room to take a measurement. I would recommend. I'm still looking for one that can run for 4-5 8 hour days on low power with rechargables before needing a change.

"Good item for the price" 2009-12-19

This item worked great for me when I did my three fingers lookout hike in late October (check it out on YouTube)It is definitely a basic headlight but it performs extremely well for the 8 dollar price tag. The one thing that I was not expecting but was pleasantly surprised by was that the middle bulb, 3 on top and bottom, one in the middle, is a diffuse bulb and is not ultra bright like the other 6 bulbs in the headlamp. This is mode three on the switch and it allowed me to read my green ways topographical map in my tent without it being too bright which hurt my eyes in my tent from the reflection. To comment on the battery life as the listing description talks about is true. I changed the batteries after 4 over night camping trips so they do last a while.

Bottom line is that this product will not perform like a Petzl but this out performed my expectations, so much so that I purchased 2 units for Christmas presents.

I purchased the Remix for its ability to give power-saving low light increments as well as a high-beam when I need to investigate far away objects in the dark. Other headlamp makes and models I've had in the past only had the ability to illuminate close-up objects. The Remix has become my trusty main lighting system on backpacking hikes. This is a fantastic light for anyone. This headlamp gives me the choice of intense light for detailed work or less light and a very high burn time(80 hours!) for hiking a trail or sitting around the fire.

I use mine mostly for fishing. The intense light from the Xenon bulb is great for tying nots or rigging the rod in the dark. The three led's work best when I am launching and loading the boat.

This Princeton headlamp exceeded all of our expectations. We use it when we walk the dogs early in the morning and at night. The high power beam reached much further than we actually needed, and the area illumination mode lights up a large area. Battery life is excellent with MAHA rechargable AA batteries. This is by far the best head lamp on the market. I'm a caver and most lights aren't bright enough, cost too much, or fall apart easily. The many modes of this light make caving so much safer. If I'm in a very large walking passage I'll switch this light to the high output middle LED. If I need to have more light directly in front of me (at my feet and 15-20 feet out) I'll switch the light to the outer four LEDs. Also, each LED has a dim mode. This is perfect for mapping or conserving battery life. The battery life is better on this light than any other consumer head lamp that I've tried. Almost everyone that I cave with has switched to this head lamp after they've caved with me a few times. The voltage regulator works very well on this lamp.

I have this headlamp and it is great. I don't know what the reviewer who wrote the scathing review about battery life is talking about. I use my APEX PRO on both spot and flood and it last many hours on a set of batteries (AA). Sturdy, good controls, easily cleaned, hard to get dirty, and bright enough to be useful (unlike many led headlamps). If I only had one headlamp this would be the one because it does it all. As useful as a flashlight in terms of brightness at less than 15 feet and hands free. I have smaller and lighter headlamps but they are also dim at less than arms length. Yes this headlamp is heavier and less comfortable than the lighter ones but it is bright enough and last a long time.

I've used this headlamp several times now and it works as advertised. The three light levels are nice, I used the lowest setting on an evening walk in the woods, and the highest for checking the pork shoulder during an all-night smoke. And it's reasonably comfortable, too. I haven't used up a set of batteries yet, so I can't speak to battery life.

Overall a very nice headlamp. A waterproof, solid yet light product with 4 uber-bright LEDs and a generous 150hr battery burn on low. Have not yet "field tested" this product but it works flawlessly lighting my path from my house to my car when I bounce at night. Even on the low setting you can see adequately in front of you to feel safe walking during the night, and is light/comfortable enough not to be a bother for a couple hours. In terms of control there is one button that cycles through high, medium, low, high flash.

A great product that greatly helps getting you to your car in the dark and also making other people squint real bad when you look them in the eye.

Good design, very practical, easy to use, and durable.

Excellent head lamp. I have tried other head lamps and even a waist belt before for running with little success. This light is awesome. Doesn't move on my head, it is lightweight, rechargeable, bright blinking red light in back, and plenty of bright white light in front. The dimming feature is a very nice touch, but one that I rarely use. On full bright, it lights up plenty of space in front of me for running, but I don't feel that it creates too much that can be blinding to others. Overall, I would say it is the best running head lamp option I have come across.

I've been shopping around for headlamps as the days grow shorter and tried out the Black Diamond Spot, Petzl Tikka, and the Myo RXP. Of those the Black Diamond Spot and the Tikka seemed quite well suited for running. I really liked the features on the sprinter so bought it without testing it out and am extremely delighted with what arrived.

I was a little worried the Srinter might be a bit like the Myo RXP since they look similar, but the Sprinter is MUCH lighter. It does not bounce AT ALL while running. I can't say that about any other headlamp with decent power output. The front lamp and the rear battery pack are thin and balance out beautifully. And, you never have to worry about using a rear blinker (its built in!) or buying new batteries (comes with docking cradle).

As for the light itself it is very bright and infinitely selectable. If you hold the power button down it turns on and starts dimming from a very bright 68 lumens down to about 5 lumens (just leg out of the power button when you are happy with the brightness). At the low power setting this thing gets over 50 hours on a charge, which is great.

Summing up, this is by far the most comfortable headlamp I've ever used -- which can be attributed to the face there are no heavy batteries bouncing around on your forehead. The fact it is also extremely bright, rechargeable, and has a rear blinker make it a no brainer.

On its brightest setting, this headlamp is VERY bright. It's reasonably comfortable to wear for long periods, and generally works just as advertised. The general quality and workmanship are excellent.

My main criticism is that the ON button is difficult to find in a hurry in the dark, and once you do find it, you have to get you finger positioned over it just right, because otherwise it's very hard to press. The second button, controlling DIM/FLASH, is even smaller. When the lamp is on your head, it's difficult to find this button by touch. If you have large fingers you might have to take the lamp of your head in order to activate it.

For my purposes, it would have been better for the light to turn on initially either in one-LED mode, or somewhere in-between one and the full eight. This would also help conserve battery power. I keep the lamp by my bedside in order to have a flashlight handy when I get up at night. Having it illuminate initially in its most blinding mode is not the ideal for me. To tone the brightness down to the level I want, I have to press the ON button four times. Of course, if you use the head lamp for caving, you might find it satisfactory the way it is. It would probably be too much to ask to have the headlight remember its brightness setting from the last time you used it. . . but that would certainly be preferable, in my opinion.

I'd give this lamp a five star rating if both the ON and DIM/FLASH buttons were raised more, or otherwise make easier to find in the dark (or on your head) by touch. Even making the ON button material out of luminescent plastic so you can SEE it would be an improvement.

The high brightness level available is a plus for such activities as hiking, bicycling, or fine work up close where you need to be able to see well. It's useful to be able to select the number of LEDs and the brightness level, since there's often no need for the maximum setting. If you can get by with the light of one LED on its DIM setting, the batteries are claimed to last 70 hours. The electronics in the lamp provide a "constant current" so the brightness is maintained well toward the end of the life of the batteries, rather than growing gradually dimmer over a long period of time.

Well thats what my wife calls me now. I have always been a serious flashlight guy and have or have had all the best streamlight and surefire lights. This thing is awesome. It takes some tweaking to get the fit just right, or it could be my huge head Im not sure. Anyway when you do get fit right it its just so cool. It is nothing short of liberating to have your hands free to do other things. Ok now for performance it is sooo much brighter than I ever thought it would be. I was thinking awhile back on getting an led light for my bicycle, now this will work just great as it throws a huge amount of light. what like 80 or 85 lumens, that is the same as surefires new led two cells; and for much less cash. The great part is that you can cut the power down as well as shut off leds until you find the light you are comfortable with. It is also very efficient with power. I use rechargeables for most my stuff and am still using the batteries it came with a few weeks ago. Use it everyday for something. What sold me was the reveiw on here of the medic in the military who uses this headlight in total darkness to set up medical field units, and now I can see how you coiuld. Also made in USA. I am also thinking about getting one of Princetons 4 led versions (lighter) with the red lens that slides up for stealth missions like hunting my reading glasses without annoying the wife more than usual. Warning... On high mode you do attract alot of flying creatures because you have a beakon on your forehead.

I have used other Princeton Tec headlamps but this one outshines them all! This is my second Corona. I use these headlamps almost daily around our property as I am often out and about in the night. Much better than the other options out there from Petzl and other dedicated outdoor manufacturers. It's amazing that those other companies can't compete with this little cheap light, and try to pass off less durable, less functional lights for more than 2x the price. The swivel works great and doesn't flop around. Red light is the best addition, works well as a battery saver and to read maps in a car. Water resistant too. I have 4 of these in cars, packs, and on the bike. Runs a long time. It's not blindingly bright, if I need that I have a 190 lumen flashlight. The switch does very occasionally pop on, but it's not a big deal as lots of other lights do it too, but to make it perfect the switch could be a bit stiffer.

I have owned this headlamp for over a year and love it. I paddle canoes and kayaks and do some overnight camping in remote areas. I have found my Energizer headlamp to be extremely useful with plenty of light. I've not yet had to replace the batteries. I use the red for reading maps and use both colors for finding my way through streams and swamps at night and for camping. This past Friday night I accidentally slipped on a muddy bank and ended up in the river about waist deep. I lost my headlamp in the bottom of the river just as we were starting a night paddle. We were gone about 2 hours and when we returned one of the group saw a red glow in the murky depths. It was my headlamp still burning. I found it easily, used it the remainder of the weekend and it's still working fine. This light is not advertised as waterproof, but it's as close to waterproof as you can get. I took it apart, let it dry out, and it's still as good as new. I highly recommend it and will buy another.... if I ever need to.

Pros & Cons: Both headlamps do an excellent job of freeing up your hands. I use the Rayovac when working around the house or on the car because the single white LED is more than sufficient lighting in close quarters. The Rayovac also has increased stability due to the additional strap. I use the Energizer when working outdoors because of the brightness afforded by additional LEDs. I would not recommend the Rayovac single white LED for seeing at a distance outside. I find the 4 Energizer LEDs are brighter than the Rayovac Krypton bulb, as well. Although the Energizer is definitely brighter, I find that it adds a slight glare to my vision--which the Rayovac does not. The Energizer push button switch can be difficult to press, especially while wearing it. The Rayovac is definitely my favorite of the two, but I'd recommend the Energizer over the Rayovac if you're going to be using it outside for things like evening yard work or camping.

I work nights at a railroad. Typically we use the standard issue 6volt lantern for lighting and signals. I need to see id numbers and the train cars themselves at a distance. I judge all lights vs the railroad lantern with the halogen bulb- Bright and 8 hours+ usable light.

Well I can toss my lantern. The Black Diamond Icon surpasses the lantern in both brightness and burn time. I've used the same batteries for 10 days(3-4 hours per night). The 3 watt spot is a brighter and more focused beam. I'm able to read id numbers further away. The four led area light is bright enough for work up to about 100ft.Both the beam and area lights have 3 levels of brightness which helps with battery life. I also have the added bonus of both hands free. So far pouring rain, splattered mud and subzero temps haven't fazed it. I have two nit picks... The on/off switch is on the bottom of the lamp which makes it cumbersome to operate with a baseball cap on and the lens on the beam scratches easier than I thought it would. That's just nitpicky though. I highly recommend this light.

we were planning to use it to hike Arches in Utah and part of the hike was in dark. It is cold in Utah and, with thick gloves on, it is impossible to operate the switch (luckily, we don't need to turn on and off frequently, but, whose knows).

I have been using Black Diamond headlamps for some time now, as does my whole family during the long winter month here in the Yukon. We currently own several Moonlight, one Zenix, and Nightray.

They all had their flaws, be it the cable, battery box or switch, but generally are our favorite headlamps.

As I was really pleased with the Nightray (discontinued now), I ordered the Icon as I wanted and expected a better output for the center LED (3W) and the AA battery option was also a selling point.

Pros:

Detachable over-head band, smoother working switch, cable appears stronger and reenforced where it enters the light or battery box. Light output is very even, pleasant.

Cons:

Generally too bulky. Yes I know the AA require more space, but the battery compartment is designed too bulky, five millimeter of empty space along both sides. The battery insert only with difficulty (it appears the bays are too tight for the rechargeable AA's). The lid only closes with lots of fumbling due to the screw being in the way. The screw is too small and difficult to turn without using a tool/coin. (Nightray had much. much better compartment).

The cable. While it appears much stronger it is still too stiff for my taste and especially when the lamp is used in arctic temperatures. I fear it will not last much longer than what we see with the other BD lamps. Why not use silicone shielded cable for these lamps?

The head. The light output is okay, but nothing to write home about. The 3W center LED, is not brighter than a bargain 1W headlight I own, which is rather strange, but easily understood when looking at the reflector design. While my cheapo 1W has a shorter reflector, it has a light-bundling lens, which the Icon has not. The Icon has a straight conical reflector with a flat lens. So no superior design to bring out the power of the 3W LED. Wasted battery power is the result.

Tests clearly show my $10, 1W headlamp shines further/brighter than the 3W Icon.

I also liked the side-by-side arrangement of the side-LEDs better with the Nightray.

The head feels bulky on this lamp.

Conclusion:

Average allround light, that has better competitors (other brands, but also their own Zenix beats it in light output according to our testing at a lesser price). I wish they had just re-designed the Nightray with a better center-LED lens/reflector and changed to an AA battery compartment. The Icon is okay when used around the yard/camp, even for trail-running/dogsledding, when there is snow on the ground, but probably not sufficient to replace one of the xenon lights for fast outdoor activities when the night is pitch black.

I purchased a pair of the Black Diamond Cosmo headlamps and my wife and I agree - a superior product in every way. We've used them for after dark chores outside and for night snow shoeing. Well built, easy to operate, and well designed - the directionality is excellent. We also ride recumbent bikes and will use these next summer to supplement the on board lighting. it basically gets 4 and 1/2 stars.....everything i like about it....the only semi-flaw is that the switching system is a bit on the complicated side....i have finally gotten comfortable with the 1/2 clicks [to put it into economy mode]....which is basically all i really need to know to get by.....but i still have no idea how or why i can switch to the spot or the flood....laugh at me....go ahead i don't mind.....i just wonder why it has to be complicated at all!

this is a totally minor minor complaint....and probably the majority has had no problem at all with this and the switching system is a dream come true for them......

buy it....so much better than anything Petzal who i will never buy again....my goddess you can spend 30 or more dollars on a headlight with a plastic latch that barely works! now that is ridiculous....

Someone recommended this headlamp to me as an inexpensive but durable light. It is very much brighter than I expected, and has two modes: a "spot" mode for trail illumination and seeing far away, and a "Superbright" mode for flood lighting and reading or seeing around the camp site. The light quality is very good, with a bluish hue from the Superbrights and a yellower hue from the spot light. Each mode has 3 brightness settings to conserve energy, and a flashing setting for emergencies. I have not used it in the rain yet, but it does say in the instructions that it works with water spray from all angles, and does not stop working even when water gets in the battery compartment. The headband is very soft and stretchy, and the light weighs only about 3 oz. when the batteries are installed. Overall, a very good little light for the money.

I have owned this headlamp for 6 months. I use it at my mountain cabin where it is sometimes pitch dark. I cannot say enough good things about how it brightens the night. I use the low setting for around the campfire or for house hold chores. The high setting single beam throws light clearly for about 80 yds. I use it for night hiking. Some headlights reflect down into the eyes of the user this one does not. I am buying a few more of these as I have need in my car and around the home, it is 1000x better than a flashlight. Great unit!!!

I use an LED headlamp daily while pedal cycling, walking and reading in bed (our interior lighting is very basic). In rural India with little or no lighting -- but plenty of snakes and scorpions -- a good headlamp is one of life's few essentials.

I hope Black Diamond have improved the Spot since the model I bought two years ago. At that time I had already used a Princetontec EOS for 8 months and bought a Black Diamond Spot and a Petzl Tikka XP by mail order for comparison.

The Spot was extraordinarily poor compared with the other two. While the EOS and the XP both had some features better than the other, the Spot had no fatures that were better than the EOS or XP! It was inferior in every respect, despite the similar price and a competitive market place. I used it for a while in case I was mistaken but the initial assesment prooved accurate and I gave the Spot to a friend who only wanted it for reading in bed.

I got this for my wife because we go motorcycle camping regularly and my old Princeton Tec light is bulky and looks fairly silly on her head (and mine for that matter).

This light is extremely bright and a very nice size. The spot is the brightest LCD I have found for a 3 AAA battery lamp. The three LED wide beam is very bright also and what I use most when I steal her lamp.

It takes a couple of minutes to get the hang of using the options for lower light level and stobe which is the same button as the off and on.

The only negative I can say about this light is that loading batteries is a PIA the first time. The battery door is hard to open until you get the hang of using the tilt adjustment on the lamp to open it. Once I figured that out it was a breeze. The batteries last a very long time even at the higher light settings.

Admittedly I am a "Gear Freak". I have no less than 4 head lamps in my backpacking drawer already before I bought this one. This one caught my eye recently and after trying it out at my outdoor store I ordered it through Amazon.com. I have the bigger Princeton that has the big battery pack in the back also and I love it but sometimes its just overkill and a tad heavy. This is very light weight and good for most things. When outdoors you most likely would want to use the highest setting to light a path. I thought the red lens would be more useful but havent foiund a great need. You cant use it to light a path so it would be more for reading and adjusting equipment relatively close up within a few feet. Has a very long run time and like all Princetons it is water proof so you can drop it in the creek or lake and it will still keep working. Its sometimes hard to tell which side is up on it when you put it on, as both look almost the same. Its great having your hands free to do whatever. My kids still give me crap about the geekiness of it though. Hmm I wonder if I got them one if they would see the light :)

This is my second LED Headlamp, I like them so much. This version is slightly different than my Streamlight, in that, it has more than just a low and high beam. It has four settings. The first three are for intensity of light (high, medium, low) and the fourth is a bright blinking flash. They all work on one large easy to use button. The waterproof strap is easily adjustable and fits comfortably and snug. It runs on 3 AAA batteries (included) and the `adjustment tool' is used to open the battery compartment. I was really surprised at how bright this headlamp is. You definitely cannot look directly into the light. I got this just in time for winter time when the lights go out in the house during a storm and I can easily move about the house in bright light.

Initially, this was a camping purchase, as its more fun to cook around a fire at night, but it is definitely unsafe with a flashlight in one hand while you are trying all of this. Even with a Coleman lantern on, this headlamp will guide you to exactly where you need to go, also letting you read instructions on camping gear and food preparations. Did I mention that it is waterproof? Ever slowly canoe at night when the animals think there is no one there? This is a necessary and fun tool.

I hesitate to write such a title, but after owning who knows how many headlamps and flashlights over the years, I think that the quad tactical takes the biscuit - it is the business.

Here's why.

Lightweight.

Single unit (means it can be rolled up and put in a jeans pocket when not in use...)

4 way LED provides nice broad flood light which is excellent for reading/map reading/navigation etc...many of the new lights are using high output luxeons etc... like the PT EOS (which I also have on my helmet and love) - but though these give great throw, they are very focused. Reading a book with a PT EOS on lowest setting means moving your head all the time to get the light spread. This is what the Quad does so well with the four LEDs. I wondered before I bought it whether you'd get four overlapping beams (like Surefire's A2), but you don't - it all merges beautifully into broad seamless light. If you want to save your night vision, the tactical version offers the pull up red screen. You know if you need this and if you're not sure, you probably don't. With the red screen in place, the low setting offers over 50 hours of good reading light on 3xAAAs very impressive.

So that is what I bought it for.

What blew me away however, was that with the screen lowered and the four LEDs exposed, set the light on full output and it is a very good floodlight indeed. It has excellent spread and smoothness and really reaches a long way. It doesn't beat the QT EOS in this area, but then horses for courses. This is not just a reading light - and it's probably everything you ever need for camping.

Added bonus - this light, unlike the PT EOS, comes on first on the lowest setting which for a reading/nav light is tactically appropriate I would suggest. One touch of the EOS and you blind everyone to kingdom come until you repeat the button and dim it.

I love both these headlamps, but the PT Quad tactical just seems about as perfect as you can get. I was waiting for the Surefire offering which looks very nice indeed - but has no red screen option - shame - I suspect that will lose them a bunch of military sales.

Can't be more happy with the Quad Tactical...oh and did I mention that the weather sealed battery door screws down with a thumbscrew so it doesn't fly open in your gear bag etc... - they got this one right!!

I had an older LL Bean headlamp and decided it was time to replace it. This one is much lighter and uses 3AAA batteries. A night-vision red lense cover can be raised and lowered while wearing the headlamp - very convenient. The light intensity is significantly less with the night vision lense raised. Strap is comfortable. Instructions regarding Alkaline and Lithium battery burn times were a bit confusing however batteries are cheap and there is a low battery indicator built into the unit. Seems sturdy.

I already own the PT Scout headlamp which is excellent (except for expensive batteries)and bought this as an alternative for cheaper rechargeable batteries, but ...

As I have read on so many reviews the (thin plastic) hinge broke on the cover for the battery compartment. It is impossible to use the light without a tight fit on this compartment.

Otherwise it was a good light, but again could use a wider range of brightness from the most bright to least bright setting (similar to the Scout). Based on the current products quality I would highly recommend the Scout.

I have owned this light for about 4 months, and have really liked having it. I ordered it because it had high ratings on REI's website, and it looked sturdy (I really dislike headlamps that lose the ability to stay pointed the direction you set them at). I have used it to ride my bike in the dark, hike, and read books after my wife goes to bed. It works great for all applications. The pivot works great, and doesn't show any signs of losing its grip. The different light settings are great for different situations. The Fuel is inexpensive, but worth the money. I even saw a review of the Tactikka Plus (Petzl) where someone switched and liked this lamp a lot more. This is a great lamp for anyone, and at the price, you could have two for the price of other comparable models. Would recommend to anyone.

I really liked this headlamp and would have given it 4 stars compared to the $10.00 Energizer from Lowes that I have. Push button is better than the slide switch (although hard to push and not at the most convenient angle), solid ratchet to angle up or down, 3 brightness levels, softer light not so glaring although I didn't care for the blue tint to the LEDS.

But after opening the battery cover with the plastic tab on the headband, like I'm supposed to, the battery cover broke. It's no surprise as it snaps VERY tight to close.

So back it goes.

"Good but not perfect" 2009-12-05

This is a great headlamp for the price. I like its ability to be aimed at different angles, the mode control is easy to use, and the light is bright and strong. One problem is that the elastic strap that goes over the top of my head is too short, even when adjusted to its maximum length. Depending on whether I am wearing the device with or without a hat, sometimes I move the top strap over to one side. But really the strap should just be a bit longer. After two weeks of use with good quality alkaline batteries, the brightest setting (with 25 LEDs on) is dimmer than the low and medium settings (3 and 9 LEDs on). Perhaps I have used the high setting too often, and the batteries have lost sufficient stored power.

I love this. I told my friends and co-workers about it and they all want a picture of me wearing this to blackmail me. I use it to walk the dogs. This way I have a free hand, I can see any approaching cat, skunk or raccoon and cars can see us. The dogs also wear lighted collars and I wear reflectors. I don't much care for the flashing light but love that you can increase or decrease the intensity of the light and it's very comfortable to wear. Plus, it's priced right.

Winter in Minnesota means that you're in darkness from 5pm to 8am during the winter months. Having a good head lamp is important! I'm really impressed with this unit. Having 3 different light settings is handy and spares the batteries when you don't need all of that extra light. In fact, it's pretty rare when I use the higher settings on this head lamp. It's also important to have cheap power and using 3 AAA batteries is a good way to go. My 20 pack still has 17 perfectly good batteries waiting to go, the lamp is certainly efficient on power.

The headband is pretty comfortable and quite adjustable in my opinion and the light has several vertical pointing adjustments so I'm happy with that too. Frankly, I can't think of too many ways to improve the device. It's certainly a good value.

This headlamp gets a 5-star review in the first 45 minutes of use! I got this because I wanted a lightweight headlamp for running after dark and to take backpacking/canoeing and other places where weight counts. I have some Black Diamond climbing equipment and their headlamps all got great reviews too, so I went with this one. As soon as I opened it I decided the design is great. Very compact, just big enough to squeeze in a couple AA batteries right behind the 3 LEDs. The elastic headband is small and won't absorb much sweat, but it's quite strong with a lot of stretch and I have to loosen it up quite a bit or I'd probably get indentations in my head!

On my first run, I like the way the three LEDs lighted up a swath ahead of me, not just one bright focused beam. There was a bright moon so I turned the headlamp off after the first 10-15 min. As I got back to my car at the end of the run I whipped off my hat and totally forgot the headlamp was on it - just for that split second until I heard the sound of lightweight plastic pieces tinkling on the blacktop. Uggh - actually had the light on for only 10-15 min and already I broke it! Take it to the car interior light for damage assessment... The lid on the batteries had popped open, but was still attached because there's a flexible retainer band that keeps the two pieces from ever getting separated by more than half an inch. The headlamp assembly had also separated from the bracket on the headstrap. I closed the lid on the battery and it turned on. Aha! Still works! I popped the headlamp back into the bracket, but put it in upside down and actually had to work a bit with a key as a lever to get it back out again to put it in the right way. So it's made of very strong plastic with a lot of flex to it. I can see a pair of tiny scratches on one corner and that's it. Bottom line: No Wal-Mart cheapie here! This well-designed headlamp constructed of very lightweight, very flexible, very strong plastic. All around great product, especially for the price!
